The College Journey of a BEED Student
When people ask, "What course are you taking?" and I say, BEED "Bachelor of Elementary Education", I often get mixed reactions. Some smile with admiration and some provide the traditional, “Ah, so you want to be a teacher?” As if it were a simple path. But only those of us walking this journey know that being a BEED student is more than just preparing to teach it’s a calling, a transformation, and a daily test of patience, passion, and purpose.
Stepping into the college gates as a second-year BEED student is both exciting and pressure. You think you know what it means to be a teacher, standing in front of a class, writing on the board, and maybe checking papers. Then the syllabus hits you (Facilitating in learning, Assessment in learning and Teaching Physical education and health). Suddenly, you realize teaching isn’t just about knowledge it’s about understanding minds, behaviors, communities. Second year is when reality settles. Lesson planning, micro-teaching, and observation tasks start to fill our days. Group projects turn into late-night meetings, and our bags get heavier not just with books, but with responsibility.
You’ll often find yourself doubting your skills. Am I patient enough? Can I manage a classroom? But these moments of doubt are also where we grow the most. We’re learning to fail forward to take feedback, to improve, and to never stop trying. This is the year, we start to see children not just as students but as individuals with unique needs. And slowly, we begin to shape our own identity not just as students, but as future educators.
